The term “stretch marks” is partly a misnomer. What actually causes the marks is an excessive amount of hormones called glucocorticoids. When extreme levels of this hormone exist in the body, the skin loses its elasticity. When the skin becomes stretched, there is an insufficient amount of collagen for the skin's natural regeneration to take place. What then happens is under the top layer of the skin is a breaking of the fibers that hold the skin together. Where the elasticity breaks, there is an absence of melanocyte cells, which give skin its color. The result is the coarse red, purple, and eventually white streaks that cause us much embarrassment and are from what the name refers.
Anyone can experience stretch marks. Stretch marks are commonly associated with pregnancy. When a woman becomes pregnant, the skin surrounding her belly stretches to accommodate the baby. Pregnant women are not the only people who can develop stretch marks. People who perform bodybuilding exercises are also susceptible to experiencing stretch marks. Other instances when stretch marks are likely to occur include rapid weight gain and growth spurts in young adults.
